Assignment #5

When I tell people that i am a math major most people ask me if i "plan on teaching?" or "what on earth would I do with that degree" or "oh I can't stand math." I decided to major in math because I was very good at math in high school and I loved being in my math classes and when I came into college I wanted to major in something general for more opportunities for jobs after college so therefore I went to a mathematics degree. A lot of people associate math with teaching and nothing else, however they would be surprised to learn that mathematics degrees are one of the highest paying careers. Math has a lot of knowledge, logic and reasoning, and problem solving and it connects to almost every career path. Some math majors have gone on to pursue law degrees, MBA degrees, pharmacy and medical school. Other people would be surprised to learn that math and economics usually go hand and hand and some classes are combined between those two majors. When I talk to people about my major I bring up these points to show them that a mathematics degree is very worth pursing and it does not just guarantee a teaching career.
I think that the government needs to invest more in math, especially because it is one of the most hardest subjects to grasp and personally sometimes I think the teacher makes the entire difference. I have had some math courses and I haven't understood them and taken them with a different teacher and everything clicks. More funding to allow students to make math "click" for them would help a lot of students want to pursue a mathematics degree in the future because they would feel like they're good at it.
