Assignment 1 - Jonathan Patterson
Mathematics, to me, is the fundamentals of everything. If simplified enough, everything can be explained in some form of math or another. Nearly all magic is a prime example of this. The other magic that cannot be explained away by math is visual deception or sleight of hand. This being said, magic is meant purely for entertainment while mathematics, as a whole, encompasses the former among a plethora of other topics.
The most memorable magic trick I remember as a child was the simple "choose a random card that only you know and I will mix and cut it into the deck, then I will find it." This, in fact, just happened to be completely separate from any form of mathematics and involved only a double lift.
Both mathematical and non-mathematical tricks can be magical. However, they do not need to be enforced as the same, simply because that is not true. Each has its own thrill to the audience.
