Assignment 5 - Justin Tooley

Most of the time when I hear people talk about mathematics it’s about how it was a waste of time to learn because they do not use math in their everyday life. They do not realize that many things around them in everyday life are only possible because of mathematics. To allow people to understand the importance of mathematics when we talk to them about mathematics. We need to explain how many of the comforts they enjoy in modern life are possible because of accomplishments in mathematics and how it is used in the production of new technology that can help improve their lives.  Having these talks with the people around us will help spread awareness of the importance of mathematics. If enough people see the benefits in mathematics research it could start to increase investment in the field. One way informing those around us could increase funding in mathematics is getting politicians to vote for investment in mathematics education and research. If a politician sees this will benefit his constituents, they will be more likely to vote for it. If we can start with a small increase in funding this will hopefully increase the mathematics literacy of the general public which will then cause the general population to want more investing in the field.
