Assignment 5 - Jonathan Patterson
Many people seem to think that mathematics has a high barrier of entry. Whenever I talk with family or strangers about my major or what classes I'm currently taking, I have to simplify it. In the end, it all comes to simplifying mathematics to compare it to something that the other person already knows. Many people love magic, which also happens to be incredible visual tool for mathematics.
While these individual interactions themselves may not directly affect national investments in math, every one does have a connection to it. Without the small, seemingly unimportant conversations about math, there can be no larger mathematical sphere of influence. This ties into how each individual person can influence political leaders to invest in not only math, but the sciences in general. Each person has the opportunity to spread, by word of mouth, the importance yet simplicity of math and science. All these conversations will eventually reach a place with significant influence in the political system; and, unless that person/people is a complete buffoon, then it is an easily recognizable issue that should be invested in.
