Assignment 1 Claire Barrera

Math can be used to describe and organize outcomes of an event. When these outcomes are analyzed it becomes possible to calculate the probability of each event happening. From my limited knowledge of magic, I know that it is a very strategic and calculated form of art. I believe magicians need to know how to calculate probabilities of events in order to manipulate the likelihood of an event happening to pull off a trick.
I do not think that math and magic are the same because I think that magic uses a combination of math and social interactions. For example, I think magic uses a lot of distractions to pull the audience’s attention to another area while the magician does something to manipulate the probability of the event happening. However, I do think that math and magic are related because math is necessary in magic to understand and manipulate the likelihood of an event happening. I do believe there are times where we should force math and magic to be the same. For example, I think math and magic are forced to be the same while do a perfect shuffle because it forces a specific outcome, which is a manipulation of math that can be considered magic.
One magic trick I saw recently was performed by Chris Pratt on the Graham Norton show. The trick was separating a deck of cards into 3 piles then having someone pick a card and after a few different types of shuffles and eliminations of some of the cards, Chris Pratt would be able to pick the same card from earlier. I believe this magic trick involved math because it involved probabilities and eliminating cards to increase the chance of picking the same card.
